Clotting Factors
A family of proteins in the blood whose job is to form a clot at a wound so bleeding stops. They activate one another in a specific sequence, like a chain of dominoes; if any one link is missing, the whole chain fails and bleeding does not stop. Factors VIII, IX, and X are three of the most-mentioned members.
Emicizumab (Hemlibra)
A bispecific antibody, marketed as Hemlibra. One end grabs clotting factor IX, the other grabs factor X, and it pulls them together, replacing the bridging role that missing Factor VIII would normally play in people with hemophilia A. Approved by the U.S. FDA in 2017 and now cleared in over a hundred countries; more than thirty thousand patients have been treated.
G Protein-Coupled Receptor (GPCR)
A large family of receptors sitting on the surface of cells. When the right chemical plugs in, it triggers a cascade of signals inside the cell. Humans carry roughly eight hundred kinds of GPCR, involved in vision, smell, heartbeat, mood, and countless other functions. About a third of all approved drugs act through them.
Hemophilia A
An inherited bleeding disorder. A mutation prevents the body from making enough Factor VIII, one of the proteins the blood needs to clot. Small bumps can bleed repeatedly, and over years the joints suffer the most, with chronic pain and reduced movement. Most affected are men, and the mutation travels through the maternal line.
Lasker Award
A major American prize for biomedical research, often called "America's Nobel." Three categories exist: Basic Medical Research, Lasker~DeBakey Clinical Medical Research, and Lasker~Bloomberg Public Service. Established in 1942 by philanthropists Albert and Mary Lasker, each carries a $250,000 honorarium. An unusually high share of laureates later go on to win the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
